You mostly have experienced this already:
Excited — eager — people wanting to do business with you, promising the moon to you.
You’ll hear things like:
“If you give me a discount I promise I’ll tell all my friends about you: I’m in a large FB group…”
“If you can buy it at this price, MAN I’ll leave you reviews, tell me friends,… etc”
“Listen, if you can get me this, I’ll owe you the world”
The truth of it is though…
The majority don’t ever “repay”.
(I’ve got 2 unpaid invoices from clients who I did the “favor” of breaking up their OmniDrip payment… something I no longer do)
Now…
I’m NOT saying to stop giving.
If you do a service or sell a product… don’t compromise based on empty promises.
There’s a lot more to say on this issue and how to make your service/product MORE valuable without discounting…
But for now…
I want to tie in Jim Camp again.
And his book, “Start with no”.
Who’s a BIG advocate against “win-win” and “compromise negotiations”.
And instead there’s a chapter about starting with what you really want.
I highly suggest the book for serious students of negotiations — and as long as you’re alive walking this earth you ARE a student of negotiations.
