Here’s a frightening and spooky #halloweentruth about a common misconception in business…
Since Robert Cialdini’s book, “Influence” was published lots of business owners have been throwing this phase around: Law of Reciprocity
(BACKGROUND: Law of reciprocity means that you give something and someone who then feels obligated to return the favor)
They claim that the law is the reason why they’re successful and why they post lots of content (email or social media or even direct mail).
But the reality is…
The law of reciprocity doesn’t work that way.
And actually… if you rely on the law, it’ll just frustrate the hell out of you.
(and it’s the WEAKEST reason why someone should do business with you)
The law worked if you were a buddhist monk giving flowers and then (that very instant) asking for charity when they took the flower.
The law works very well at the moment the “exchange” is happening.
But when it comes to business…
It’s not reciprocity that makes people want to whip out their wallets (or sign that contract or JV with you).
Think about it…
Just because you’re pumping out content, do you really think people will then want to “return the favor” by paying thousands of dollars to you or signing over their equity to you?
MAAAAYBE for a “like” or a reply back in email (which is something I’ll be teaching in my book that covers email marketing for investors)
Plus…
YOU DON’T WANT THAT TYPE OF BUSINESS;
WHERE THEY ONLY DO BUSINESS BECAUSE THEY NEED TO RETURN THE FAVOR.
Instead…
The reason why pumping out content works is two fold:
-
You keep showing up; therefore you’re top of mind
-
You raise your expertise and trust.
Which are principles of marketing; principles of follow up.
These are things I plug into my system that you can purchase.
For those that have purchased from me… stay tuned as I have about 2 “goodies” for you in Q1 that keeps doubling down on these principles.
Those that haven’t…
You can hop on this link and choose your sequences
(we’ll make them semi custom to you and your business, and plug them into your CRM)
P.S. I MIGHT be raising my prices soon. This isn’t fear mongering and trickery, but at least doing you a favor if you’re on the fence and letting you know what I want to do.
